I didn’t say he was King of the Jews, he did, supposedly. It’s all hearsay as to what he might have said or believed anyway as none of the writers of the New Testament were witnesses to the events of his life. If he was running around saying he was King of the Jews and the son of God of course according to Jewish law he would have been a heretic. If.
The book of Mark was written when there were still people alive to have remembered the events (around AD60), and many scholars believe that the other books in the Gospel were written with Mark as a basis. Regardless, it wasn’t hearsay, but writings of someone that had been there. Do we see any contemporary writings that refute what the writers of the Gospels wrote? No.
As for the “King of the Jews” part, there were many that expected Jesus to fit what the Jews were looking for in a Messiah. The Jewish leadership didn’t like the ideas that Jesus was teaching. They accused Jesus of trying to replace Caesar when they sought to have Him executed by the Romans.
As for the Jewish law, Jesus’ accusers didn’t abide by their own rules– the Sanhedrin met at night in secret, so they could decide how to get Jesus “out of the way”. Such a meeting was against their own law, for reason of timing, if nothing else.
HEARSAY - Secondhand information that a witness only heard about from someone else and did not see or hear himself.
The Gospel of Mark’s author is anonymous but attributed to Mark. Mark was not a witness to Christ’s teachings or the events of his life and death. All the information that Mark received were from other sources. Because of that it makes the Gospel hearsay according to the definition.
Regardless of the King of the Jews bit, if he was claiming to be the Son of God, as all four Gospels claim, that in itself would be considered heresy according to Jewish law.
As for as the original poster saying that “we thought he was a heretic” thats not true. If it were we wouldn’t be having this conversation. Enough Jews followed him, and believed what he said, whatever that was, for an entire religion to be established in his name.
First up! I love this comic. *head shaky / art criticy facy looks* You really REALLY RILLY got your shit together as far as writing comics. I’m loving the reading and stuff.
I’m intrested in this particular discussion. The most credible (to my mind) story I heard was that the big wigs of the Jews were told they had to submit a quota of folk for execution to Herod. They picked up on this guy named Jesus… Hell! After the riot at the Temple of David, why wouldn’t they! They put his name forward with a bit of a note that read along the lines of “He thinks he’s the king of the Jews.” When Herod asked Jesus about this, Jesus said something along the lines of. “You said that. Not me.” Herod went and had his flippant ass nailed to a tree.
Again! I don’t know shit from tooth brushes when it comes to this stuff! This was the story I heard that made the most scence to me. If anyone has some better info I would dearly love to look into it… I’m keenly intrested on what happened on that Thursday. It really does speak to what we KNOW happened on that Friday and it could shed a massive amount of light on what happened on that Sunday.
